This collective punishment of Palestinians is justified by Israel as a heroic undertaking by a small country that is surrounded by a sea of hostile Arabs. But let us not forget that this small country is far from helpless. It has approximately 300 nuclear bombs and one of the best equipped conventional armies(paid for with U.S. tax dollars.)The Palestinians have some homemade rockets-a truly David and Goliath relationship. Let us also not forget that the chief objective of Israel is to rid the area of Arab inhabitants. Israel may bore us with their old refrain that the Arabs want to push them all into the sea. But those of us who have followed the history of the Israeli state remember their original self description,"a land with no people for a people with no land." Perhaps they didn't notice that a thriving indigenous population known as Palestinians did in fact live there. Or perhaps the Irgun and Stern gang were only describing the land as they envisioned it when all of the Palestinians were exterminated by their ethnic cleansing policy. Please help me to understand just how the U.S. can ever achieve a balanced approach to resolving this conflict when the likes of Rahm Emanuel, as Chief of Staff, is a dual citizen of both the U.S. and Israel. Doesn't this pose a conflict of interest? Wasn't there a time when patriotism meant alligence to the interests of this country alone? Or was the love fest during the presidential debates over just who loved Israel the best a prelude to establishing the new national objective as considering the interests of Israel as being the primary concern of U.S. foreign policy? I fail to see just how the elimination of the Palestinian people and pissing off one billion Muslims around the world is being in the best interest of the United States.

Joseph,
Thank you for your comments and for introducing me to your wonderful blog. What chart do you use for the modern state of Israel?
The demonstrations that have erupted from this New Moon event, notably the one I witnessed last night in San Francisco that turned into a spontaneous mass march, are, as I see it, true revivifying responses (Saturn [responsibility] sparked newly alive by Uranus [ordinary people united]). Predictably, the mass media minimizes these, reporting -- if they mention it at all -- what's happening in Gaza from a point of view so slanted as to not even pretend to objectivity. Their tone is "Poor Israel, all they're trying to do is eliminate that wicked Hamas, and they have to deal with all these pesky uprisings".) Here in the US our truth-seeking must involve this complicity of the media.
Blessings of the New Year, Joseph,
our next chance to turn things around.
Jessica

What a brilliant analysis. I am reading your book, almost at the end of it. This blog serves to continue hearing your sane voice. Thank you.

I believe Israel has recently had its Second Saturn Return. Any comments on that, and the fallout from it, would be enlightening.
