Mpk,
A lot of psychological and philosophical thinkers and writers, as well as sex therapists, have gotten hip to the Vesta principle in recent years; mostly through the work of Riane Eisler and Marija Gimbutas. And though it isn't necessarily framed in astrological terms, the basic idea that the prehistorical world held sex to be sacred is often referred to by people who consider themselves "sex-positive.". There are even a few sacred harlots out there, introducing pilgrims to the Mysteries and charging for their services.
Thanks for writing,
JM

Just found the article in DayKeeper Journal... this is great stuff. How does the culture heal and transform this suppressed Vesta stuff to something healthy and honest and what does that transformation look like? Any thoughts on that? Is anyone doing this kind of work that you respect?

MPK,
It's true, and I think that seeming irreconcilability is the point. The humanistic approach to astrology holds that in dealing with such quandaries (e.g. personal desire vs. responsibility), we find out things about ourselves that we wouldn't if there were no struggle. It's not as if there's an absolute answer out there, that we're supposed to already know. It's that in struggling self-honestly with an apparent contradiction (how to honor the desires in a way that's responsible to others), we glimpse the possibility of paradox -- a cosmic reality hard for the human mind to grasp.
Jessica

How to honor our sensate selves in healthy, conscious ways; at the same time that we surrender to the unconscious drives that are guiding us to deep healing? How might we acknowledge both urges without giving up the manageability of our lives?

The best approach is to already know where we’re wounded (Chiron)...

It takes humility (Neptune) to admit that we don't always know what to do with our desires (Mars & Venus); and humility is exactly what we're supposed to be learning.

I'm very interested if you care to expand on this. Your eloquent words get close to the heart of the matter in a way I've seldomed experienced before. It so often seems that the conflict between our desires and our responsibilities is irreconcilable.

It takes humility (Neptune) to admit that we don't always know what to do with our desires (Mars & Venus); and humility is exactly what we're supposed to be learning.

Rumple,
If I were the marrying type I'd probably have more opinions on this, but I've never cottoned to the institution (per my "Santa Pluto" blog). And though, as you say, women seduce, too, strict comparisons are problematic in a society where everything from politics to economics are skewed to male power. I personally follow the same rule you do, but I think everyone has to figure out their own moral code and its attendant karma. And I don't think we can say infidelity is blase for anyone -- at the very least, not to the one who's been cuckolded.
Thanks for writing in.
Jessica

I'm all for compassion and this article is brilliant... but I have a question. Why is it that the man always gets all the attention for this? Why don't women refuse to sleep with married men or vice versa? Most men can be seduced and it seems there are plenty of women who don't care to honor the marriage commitment of another man or respect the married man's wife enough to stay away. To me, a married person is off limits sexually... and that is my responsibility regardless of whether or not they are willing to break their own commitment.

Or should we just think of infidelity as something blase and not that important?

Frederick,
Amen. In terms of sexual sophistication, America must come across to the rest of the world as a sniggering schoolboy. Moreover, the GOP politicians who freak out like this all seem to subscribe to religions that keep them in arrested development spiritually. Yet another part of the problem is the ludicrously low standards to which the public holds the media, which pounces on each of these "scandals" to hold in thrall the lowest common denominator of popular interest.
Thank you for your comment.
Jessica
